Abstract

The RELOCAL project (EU Horizon 2020) ran from 2016 to 2020, investigating spatial justice and territorial inequalities in relation to local and community development. At the empirical core of the project were 33 community development projects across 11 member states and National Reports such as this one for the UK, supplemented the individual case study reports by providing greater detail and background on the national context as well as by comparing and contrasting national case studies and drawing conclusions about the operation of community and local development projects in each nation. This report explains the different administrative and policy contexts of England and Scotland within the UK and draws conclusions from the three UK case studies - a rural and urban case from England and a rural case from Scotland. The report finds that all three place-based interventions were to some degree tailored to local needs, and facilitated highly innovative projects within their areas, but faced challenges of varying scales in providing equitable support within communities and of minimising the creation of new injustices between communities.
