Notes: This individual research addresses fundamental issues related to design, production and use of maps. In-depth studies of map complexity are rare, and this intensive study integrates a number of varying approaches. The novel conclusion is that data compression shows promise as an index which can be used to characterize the graphical variation within the map face: a significant number of potential application areas for such an index are presented.
