This chapter discusses the challenges and opportunities for researching live music through the method of a census. It draws on our experience of running the United Kingdom’s first national Live Music Census (the project was named the UK Live Music Census) in March 2017 and falls into six parts: (1) the background to our work in live music research; (2) a review of previous censuses; (3) lessons learned from previous censuses; (4) the context for the UK Live Music Census; (5) experiences of running the census; and (6) issues for discussion arising from the census. Our conclusion suggests that such projects are likely to remain part of the research landscape for the foreseeable future, but also cautions that they are not for the faint hearted or the methodologically nervous.
