Abstract

This collection examines the complex negotiations implicit in the pursuit of home, and made by refugees moving across regions and nations. The resettlement of refugees has commonly been understood by policy makers, practitioners, and scholars as forming part of refugee management on a global scale, that can involve diverse forms of control, such as border regulations and humanitarian governing strategies (e.g. Betts1 , Newland2 ). While contemporary policy agendas focus on migrant integration processes, so doing overlooks the ways in which refugee transitions from one life to another involves both the loss and re-making of home. This collection offers mitigating perspectives from the fields of social sciences and humanities, which interpret the negotiations of rights to housing, employment, and citizenship, and ask how such endeavors expose diverse levels of refugee home-making as activism. Timely in its focus on the variegated experiences of Syrians and neighboring refugees, and unique in its interdisciplinary focus, it advances definitions of “home” as hybrid and fluid. Accordingly, a multi-dimensional set of perspectives regarding Syrian experience of migration is offered within this issue, as contributions come from established and emerging scholars in the fields of International Relations, History, Politics, Sociology, Literature, and Anthropology.
