Abstract

Against the backdrop of the increasing popularity of diary studies in the higher education context, there is further warrant for a methodological-related appreciation of diary studies, specifically the use of audio diaries. A focus on the methods for recording audio diaries is required to help clarify the rationale behind adopting this research technique when obtaining a participant’s enhanced reflection of everyday learning experiences. In this chapter, it will be argued that diary studies are valuable personal and research documents, which are instrumental for: (a) assisting researchers’ capacity to understand learners’ ideas, feelings and reactions in relation to their experiences; and (b) guiding participants’ reflection on their own experiences. This chapter examines the challenges faced by employing audio diaries from the research design stage to the collection and analysis of audio diaries. With a view to informing and enhancing practice with regard to the further use of audio diaries in the digital age, this chapter will highlight the key features and advantages of utilising audio diaries to enhance the quality of the overall research design and the data collected.
