Abstract

Drawing a parallel between the lives of saints and the lives of contemporary migrants, Massimo Pastore’s public art photography project Santi Migranti proposes a visual challenge to growing anti-migrant sentiment. The walls of many Italian and European cities bear evocative images of patron saints wearing the gold, isothermal blankets used in maritime rescues. Even saints were migrants: Patricia, who shipwrecked at Megaride in Naples where she became a beloved saint, and Brigit of Sweden who left her homeland to work and died in Italy. The film traces the origins and impact of these images from the perspective of the artist and the contemporary migrants who are portrayed wearing the garments of saints. The film premiered at the artcnema film festival in Napoli in 2022 and is currently touring film festivals.
