Globalisation has impacts not just on national and local economies, but also on our everyday lives and our roles as men and women. This paper considers the opportunities now presented to re-examine fundamental questions of how we want to live and how our planning and governance processes mesh with the way we live. It argues that we have an opportunity to put people back at the centre of our planning as we re-examine the fit between everyday life, built environment and services. In reasserting the importance of getting in touch with real lives we also need to change the way we interact with citizens. Drawing on characteristics from projects in the EuroFEM network the paper sets out the possibility of changing outcomes and cultures in planning and governance.
