Abstract

The Dehesa, which covers 3.1 million hectares in Spain and Portugal, is recognised as a High Nature Value (HNV) farming system due to its multifunctionality. This Iberian HNV system, known as Montado in Portugal, is an agrosilvopastoral ecosystem in which Permanent Grassland (PG) constitutes an essential component. Therefore, this study aims to assess the feasibility of multiple PG management options and innovations in terms of their ease of implementation, likely uptake by farmers, and potential to deliver ecosystem services (ES) under different farming intensity types (including organic and intensive/extensive non-organic farms). Agronomy-related practices regarding sward manipulation (sward renewal, overseeding), grazing management (GPS collars, rotational grazing) and high-tech innovations (monitoring and predicting grass growth by satellite and drone technology) were considered. To test the feasibility of the management options, a modified Delphi technique was used to explore the opinions and attitudes of an interdisciplinary group of scientific experts. Additionally, farmer interviews were conducted to identify their familiarity, experience, and intention to adopt. The results give insight into the prioritisation of management options for PG in the Dehesa/Montado systems and starting points for a better understanding of how farmers can be supported to adopt positive technologies for multiple ES delivery on PG
