Abstract

This perfume has been developed in dialogue with people who work at and live near the oil refinery in Lysekil. For some, the scents from the refinery are associated with everyday life, job security, and prosperity. The fragrance veils evoke memories from a time when the industry created new communities, job opportunities, and optimism about the future. For others, the scents bring about concern. A neighbor likened the smells from the industry to a "bomb." Others shared how the winds from the refinery make it difficult to sell their homes and keep them trapped in a polluted natural environment.Scents affect our relationship with industries and, in turn, can influence the social dynamics of industrial towns. These are the aromas/fragrance components that have been used to create the final scents. In perfume manufacturing, individual simpler fragrance components are referred to as "notes," which, in turn, can compose "chords," a more complex scent theme conveying something specific. In this case, Raff 1 - Forest is composed of:Forest Chord - Scent of wood and fresh leaves from beech and birch, combined with earthy, damp notes of decaying leaves and deep balsamic tones of resin. A walk through the forest on a warm and humid day in early autumn.Smoke Chord - The strong and warmly penetrating scent of a campfire, burning wood, and forest fires.Industrial Chord - The volatile scents from the chemical by-products of the oil refinery.Sulfur/Gas Chord - The typical and slightly sweet but intoxicating scent of gas and refinery vapors.Sweaty Worker Chord - The scent of warm skin towards the end of a hard day's work at the refinery. The chords described above have been created to interact with each other, much like the scents of the natural landscape interact and compete with each other. The industrial and sulfur/gas chords have been designed to evaporate quickly: they are in the top scent layer and are the first notes we can perceive. These notes disperse and reveal what lies behind: the forest and the people who share their lives with the industry and the machinery that has shaped and transformed them.Raff 2 - Coastal is composed of:Coastal Air Chord - The fresh sea breeze, cool air, water pools in rocks, saltwater, the sweetness of grass, and beachside flowers.Sulfur/Gas Chord - The typical and slightly sweet but intoxicating scent of gas and refinery vapors. The two chords above interact and mingle with each other: first, the sulfur/gas chord appears, evaporates with the wind, and in its place emerges a fresh coastal scent. Initially, both of these chords compete for our attention. A stronger wind from the sea then takes over the gas scent, leaving behind the fresh coastal aroma.
