Abstract

This video/animation and banner were created in Slite, a small coastal community on the eastern coast of Gotland. For over a hundred years, cement production has shaped Slite's local identity, economy, and livelihood. The residents of Slite have conflicting feelings about the cement industry. For some, the factory evokes a sense of belonging and security. Others worry about the industry's carbon footprint and how extensive limestone quarrying affects groundwater and the local ecology.Participants were asked to express these emotions through movement and dance. They were also given the opportunity to create a banner based on a recorded sound landscape from Slite. The participants used words like environmental pollution, excavation, and water scarcity to explain their creative expressions. They connected changes in the local natural environment to global challenges. Some dancers challenged the technical and male-dominated language used in the cement factory's climate work and desired more discussion about women's experiences in the cement industry.A 92-year-old woman shared her feelings of growing up in the shadow of the Slite cement factory. She shared memories of a tree that had long served as a "protector" against the factory for her and her friends. This project provides insight into the intimate and personal stories that industrial transformations give rise to. These narratives are just as important as those conveyed by industry, politics, and unions. Transition is personal and closely intertwined with gender issues.
