Abstract

This video explores Luleå's ongoing climate transition. The steel industry's ambition to lead the way towards fossil-free operations generates a great deal of local pride. However, the transition policies also evoke more complex emotions within the city. The bubbles in the video symbolize the spectrum of hydrogen's colors and local aspirations for a greener and more sustainable future. But these colors also reflect Luleå's diversity and can be found in flags from countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, Eritrea, Iraq, and Ethiopia. Many newcomers to Luleå expressed fear, frustration, and sadness at being excluded from the city's steel history and industrial heritage. The nyckelharpa in the soundtrack gives voice to young migrants seeking belonging and community. The video aims to challenge the nostalgia and attachments that the city's industrial history carries with it.Luleå's proud transition narrative is not meant for everyone.
