Abstract

This banner was made through community participation in Wallsend (UK). Wallsend was famous for shipbuilding and some citizens want and are searching for a new industrial future. The banner documents how discussions of industrial change often privilege industry and government. Yet citizens have opinions that matter also. Is anyone listening? Here citizens represent sustainable futures colliding with industrial nostalgia. The banner was made by the community in collaboration with the artist to express what they think about the past, present, and future. In this community, banner-making has been part of expressing their culture.
