Abstract

We aimed to increase student engagement, critical thought, and satisfaction in the postgraduate Public Health MSc module ‘Introduction to systematic review and critical appraisal’ by incorporating whole class co-creation of a single element, the assessment design. Using Padlet, an online notice board, students were asked to anonymously post topics they would like to critically appraise. Students were then asked to review all posts and up or downvote according to their preferences. Information about the co-creation exercise was posted to Canvas, and Padlet remained open for one week. Hence, students who could not attend the module had an opportunity to engage in topic selection. Thirty-one people contributed to the Padlet discussion, creating 27 posts and 154 reactions (voting). All 24 topics suggested were relevant to public health, the three highest-ranking were:1. The relationship between austerity and food insecurity in the UK2. Hormonal contraceptives and the risk of suicide3. Psychological intervention on patients with coronary heart diseaseEngagement in the open online feedback had a poor response, so we conducted a targeted evaluation. Two responded, expressing their view on participating in co-creation. Both indicated its usefulness, “I think this was a great idea, being able to contribute to the selection of the assignment topic helped us to select a topic we were interested in and would further our development” And increased course satisfaction, "It was one of the things that made this module stand out from the rest!”
