Abstract

The book charts the first eight years of ATLAS’ practice organising our activity under four thematic headings: Located, Praxis, Temporalities and Resilience. The book aims to record the evolution in our practice and the essential contributions the artworks, artists, and communities we have worked with have made to the imaginaries of our remote rural location.A Commonplace Book is a curated collection of written extracts, reflective notes, explorative ideas and biographical inserts. It is a characteristically idiosyncratic organised depository of information devised for future reference. Typically, the book is organised through a personal narrative, combining copied passages of existing writing alongside diaristic entries and litanies.Mirroring this, we present the Commonplace Book of ATLAS part biographical note, part documentation, chronicling the activity of ATLAS Arts from 2010-2018. It has been created as a marker of a moment in time, compiled over several years. There are contributions from those deeply connected to our projects and others because they share affinities with our working methods. The book creates an archive of insights into realised and unrealised work. Shared here is a diverse range of material from academic writing, snippets of conversations interleaved and enriched with project documentation.Featuring contributions from Ruth Barker, Cooking Sections, Shona Cameron, Keg de Souza, Ilana Halperin, Katy Hastie, Roger Hutchinson, Lucas Ihlein, Moira Jeffrey, In the Shadow of the Hand, Angela McClanahan-Simmons and Hanna Tuulikki, Gavin Morrison, Neil Mullholland, James Oliver, Frances Priest and Stephen Bungard, Ernesto Pujol, Jane Rendell, Anushka Rajendran, Jane Rendell, Kirstie Skinner, Domhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart, Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan and Walker and Bromwich.
