The influence of government affiliation level on Chinese MNEs' strategic motivation preference for specific FDI strategies

Abstract

This paper examines the impacts of government affiliation levels on Chinese MNEs’ specific purposes-oriented Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). A pooled probit regression is used to test whether Chinese MNEs’ different government affiliation levels influence their traditional natural resources-, and strategic technology- resources, seeking OFDI motivations in the period from 2006 to 2015. Using a sample of Chinese companies that have fully completed cross-border merger and acquisition deals (CBM&As). Our findings extend the institution-based view identifying that CMNEs with higher government affiliation levels largely tend to seek for natural resource endowments other than technology- based strategic assets via CBM&As
