The paper offers a reconstruction of Vichian ideas in order to offer a substantial and significant contribution to debates over political legitimacy in the current climate of political liberalism and the problem of the universalisation or objectivity of liberal values. The two, Vichian, axes of a normative social thesis would be characterised as the claim that a society, characterised as a web of meanings, values and concepts, is legitimate if (1) it can justify its institutions and practices to its own members in terms of publicly shared values; and (2) can also demonstrate that the institutions and practices do not violate the basic needs which ground the invention of all human societies.
