This is a qualitative study of interviews with Royal Ulster Constabulary that explores officers’ interpretations of women’s involvement in paramilitary violence in Northern Ireland. The interviewees’ responses to these women were complex and multi-layered. Surprisingly, women were considered to be more successful than men in paramilitary activities because of the skills and attributes they used from gender roles and many interviewees displayed greater respect for women than men who were directly involved in violence. This article will consider some of the possible implications of the interviewees’ responses to women for developments in security and policing policies.
