Abstract

All recent syntactic theories assume that sentences have a syntax which can be fully specified by explicit rules. Alarcos Llorach, for example, in his Gramática de la lengua española divides the members of the verb phrase into distinct categories according to the syntactical function performed by each. The present article demonstrates that these categories shade into one another, in such a way that on occasion certain forms cannot be definitively classified. This phenomenon of marginal codification suggests that sentence construction does not always follow fixed rules.
