This review examines the role of hormones, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, in benign and malignant breast disease and looks at some of the controversial aspects of these topics. The normal physiology of the breast is not discussed nor are other growth factors that are regulated by these hormones as their interactions, although of great importance, lie outwith the scope of this article.
