Abstract

A collection of short pieces lasting 20 minutes for two players, one playing charango and ten-string guitar and the other playing flute, alto flute and piccolo. Duration 18 minutes.

Of 20 minutes’ duration, this work is a collection of nine ètudes for two players, one alternating charango with ten-string guitar and the other a range of flutes. A small folk guitar of the Andes, the charango epitomises my cultural background and was the instrument in childhood. As an adult I returned to it to generate electroacoustic sounds for Teoponte and I put it centre-stage in the concert piece Wounded Angel (NMC D036). In response to this work, three British composers (Young, Lovett, Rosas-Cobian) have written new pieces for the instrument, and the Swedish guitarist Stefan Östersjö taught himself the instrument with the purpose of playing Wounded Angel. After performing and touring it extensively, Östersjö commissioned further repertoire from Swedish composers such as Kent Olofsson’s concerto Il liuto d’Orfeo. The fact that A to Z, too, was a commission from Östersjö for himself to play illustrates a process of dissemination of the instrument in Northern Europe I claim to have initiated. The new repertoire is also causing ripples in South America, involving players such as Pastor Villca (Bolivia), Alejandro Lavanderos (Chile) and Adriana Lubiz (Argentina), and composers such as Iglesias Rossi and Simonovich (Argentina).
