Abstract

Three songs for soprano and piano, with words in Spanish and music by Agustín Fernández. The songs are 1. Desiderata, 2. Dame, 3. Más desiderata On one level I explore issues of language intelligibility in singing by superimposing a palimpsest of Spanish words on melodic sequences adapted from a traditional song originally in the Moxos language of eastern Bolivia. Phonetically the Spanish text mimics the Indian words, whereas semantically it adds a further layer by discussing the problematics of coca growing and consumption in a climate where outside interference has criminalised the use of this ancestral plant. On another level the music and the words deal with the condition of yearning which can be seen as personal or cultural or national. The uneasy flurries on the piano under the languorous vocal lines in the first song invoke an unnamed force or substance that will, like a deus ex machina, make it possible to transcend one’s limitations. The monolithic sound blocs and apostrophic declamation of the last song investigate a state of having-transcended, being already beyond, but still seeking fulfilment.
