Abstract

For many years, the preferred error-correcting coding scheme for magnetic and optical storage devices has been the well-known Reed-Solomon codes. Their popularity is due to their good performance in conditions where bursts of errors occur and also the availability of efficient decoding algorithms. However, as storage densities increase the limitations of Reed-Solomon codes will eventually result in them becoming unsuitable for future storage devices. In this paper, we present some preliminary simulation results of Hermitian codes on Lorentzian channels with electronics noise using partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) detection. These results are compared with Reed-Solomon codes and it can be seen that due to their improved parameters Hermitian codes not only outperform Reed-Solomon codes defined over the same finite fields, but they can also outperform Reed-Solomon codes defined over much larger finite fields. This shows that Hermitian could be considered as an alternative error-correcting scheme in future storage devices.
