A high efficiency in-wheel drive motor for a solar-powered vehicle

Abstract

The design of a high efficiency, in-wheel drive motor for a solar-powered racing cars is presented. The direct drive is for eliminating drive-train losses, while the motor is fitted inside the front wheel of the car to reduce aerodynamic drag and to increase efficiency. Two types of permanent magnet motor were designed, one employing Halbach magnet arrays and the other with conventional surface mounted magnets. The Halbach magnet array type has a substantially better performance than the surface mount magnet alternative, but is more expensive to produce.
