Iron Powder in Electrical Machines, Possibilities and Limitations

Abstract

The powder metallurgy process has for quite some time been used to manufacture soft magnetic components for both DC-application and for high frequency applications. Nowadays, powders and compacting have been developed to such an extent that iron powder components can compete with laminates in the medium frequency range for example as soft magnetic material in electrical machines. A huge new market can now be targeted by the powder metallurgy industry. Both material properties and component manufacturing is different for powder metallurgy components as compared to laminates. New possibilities can be explored taking advantage of the unique material properties and the powder metallurgy production route. However, some applications will be difficult to target with current material and compacting techniques. This presentation will highlight possibilities and also limitations for powder metallurgy components in electrical machines.
