Abstract

An analysis of structure and characterization of most bulk materials and coatings controlled by interface was performed. The performance of the bulk materials was influenced by surface grain and phase boundaries. A method for modelling the hardness/substrate systems based on bulk materials and surface deformation contributions to the work of indentation was introduced. The model used few physically reasonable parameters to predict the hardness of a very complicated coating system.
