Effect of oxide additives on densification behaviour of hot-pressed β-sialon ceramics

Abstract

z=1 β-Sialon starting powders which consist of 83.69 Wt.% Si 3N4, 7.80 Wt.% AlN, 8.51 Wt.% Al2O3 plus oxide additives were mixed and ball milled with isoproponal alcohol. Afterwards, the slurry was dried and sieved. The mixed β-sialon powders were hot-pressed at various temperatures and pressures. Densification behaviour of the samples were determined and x-ray analysis were carried out to find out amount of α- Si3N4 to β-sialon transformation. Densification and x-ray analysis results showed that densities and extent of α- Si3N4 to β-sialon transformation clearly both increase as the temperature increases. SEM image analyses were also carried to observe effect of pressure and heat on porosity. Above 1550°C notable densification were occurred and porosity were sharply decreased. While yttria addition was increased α-β transformation at lower temperatures, densification started at early stage by using MgO addition. Hence, each of these oxide additives was used together to achieve full densification and to complete α to β-sialon transformation.
