PPD is that part of the curriculum that is dedicated to developing in trainees a capability to reflect critically and systematically on the work-self interface. This process is directed towards fostering personal awareness and resilience. PPD has been operationalised but remains an essentially atheoretical construct. The roles within the various scaffolds that maintain the process may give rise to confusion. Whilst activities such as groupwork are used, their purpose remains obscure. Little evaluation is undertaken and evidence for good practice is slim. Assessment remains contentious. Nonetheless, an opportunity has arisen for PPD to become a unifying rather than divisive construct; as a trainee-led personal assimilation of declarative theory and procedural practice.
