Design reuse of complex systems within an integrated modelling environment

The Newcastle Engineering Design Centre with BAE Systems have developed a modelling framework representation to support the modelling of complex engineering systems. The purpose of this framework is to allow a range of models, representing a wide variety of aspects relating to engineering systems, to be integrated. The objectives of doing this are to: obtain an overall representation of such systems, allow system evaluation, identify emerging properties relevant to the design process and reveal the potential for trade-off analyses and interdependency evaluations. Central to this is the ability to trace properties within the product hierarchy. This capability is also essential to implement a methodology for the reuse of designs for complex systems. This paper focuses on the development of a set of methodologies to achieve these objectives and begins by outlining the basic modelling processes used.
