Obstetric anaesthesia has developed as a subspecialty in its own right from the recognition of the distinct needs of the mother to be. This article traces the field of obstetric anaesthesia from the early days of James Young Simpson through to the present day practice of an often exciting, occasionally frustrating, but always rewarding branch of the field of anaesthesia.
