Abstract

Structural changes in yttrium and rare-earth sialon J-phases are reviewed as a function of the compositional parameter x in the general J-phase formula (Y,Ln)(4)Si2-xAlxO7+xN2-x. Rietveld crystal structure refinements are reported for the x=0, x=1 and x=2 members of the Yb J-phase system and these show that, whereas the end-members have the same structure as lutetium J-pbase, the x=1 composition has the structure of the slightly different lanthanum J-phase.
