Over the years there have been many losses of the merchant vessels due to either accidents or exposure to large environmentally induced forces. Such casualties represent considerable financial loss of both the vessel and its cargo also, possibly more importantly, to loss of life and of damage to the marine environment. The structural condition of a vessel when it is entering a period of higher than normal risk, particularly in heavy weather, is clearly very important. The potential for the structure capability degrading effects of both corrosion and fatigue induced cracks are of profound importance and must be both fully understood and reflected in vessel’s inspection and maintenance programme. The complex effects of both corrosion and fatigue cracking manifest themselves at both local and global structure performance levels. It is probable that subsequent structural degradation, for example buckling failure, will develop in a progressive form and spread with both further corrosion and cracking in time dependent manner, subject to continuing environmental demands. Various factors which increase corrosion degradation rates and existing corrosion models for tanker are evaluated and introduced. New approach to estimate the ultimate strength of ageing ship structure considering recent corrosion model and fatigue induced cracks has been investigated in order to establish proper inspection and maintenance programme in ageing ship.
