A novel intelligent health monitoring system for gear fatigue failure prediction

Abstract

Bending fatigue failure in gears is catastrophic and can cause significant damage and to prevent this damage, it is necessary to monitor its initiation and occurrence. Currently, three monitoring techniques are in use: vibration, acoustic emission, and oil debris analysis; however our studies have shown the value of fusing the data from all three techniques. This paper presents a novel intelligent health monitoring system (IHMS) that combines vibration, acoustic emission (AE), oil debris analysis (ODA) using fuzzy logic. The IHMS has been implemented on a back-to-back gearbox and can be adapted to monitor the behavior of transmission systems in aircraft, marine, wind turbine, and industrial machinery. The study describes the operation of the online IHMS under variable conditions and its capability in detecting transmission gear bending defects to prevent sudden unexpected failures.
