This paper explores the experiences of international counseling students on a postgraduate counseling programme at Newcastle University in the UK and draws on the research findings from an empirical study of their experiences (Pattison, 2003). These original empirical findings are subjected to further interpretation, mapped against concepts of internationalization identified from a thematic analysis of Turner & Robsons’ work (2008). Key issues emerged relating to both personal and professional development gains in relation to students’ perceptions of their role as counselor, their motivation and confidence. The analysis suggests that these perceptions were influenced by opportunities to interact and reflect on both the theoretical and practice aspects of the counseling role. Gains also related to the development of students’ intercultural awareness and communication skills and learning and social behaviours, with implications for international counselor training and education in British universities.
