Interpretation of results from the MSAJ "Testing Method for Elastic Constants of Membrane Materials"

Abstract

The Membrane Structures Association of Japan test method for elastic constants of membrane materials (MSAJ 1995) is frequently used to define test protocols for the biaxial testing of architectural fabrics. The interpretation of the strain and load measurements arising from a completed test is not frequently reported, however. The "commentary" to the MSAJ method proposes a number of methodologies that may be used to calculate values of elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio. The approaches proposed in the commentary require the minimisation of a function that compares the test and predicted data for all load ratios simultaneously, and inherently enforces the reciprocal relationship of an isotropic material. In this paper the methodologies are explained and demonstrated using sets of anonymous test data. The effect of enforcing the reciprocal relationship is considered, and the robustness and sensitivity of the calculation methodologies are investigated. A number of comments and recommendations are made which are intended to be of use to design engineers.
