Abstract

The use of FRP structure in otherwise steel warships allows weight savings to be achieved that are very beneficial for warship design. The bonded connection of FRP components to their mating steel structure then becomes the key aspect to be examined for the inclusion of such FRP components. The connections have to provide appropriate mechanical strength, be producible and also meet fire performance requirements. In this paper the work undertaken to assess the strength of a typical composite to steel connection at elevated temperature is described based on results from furnace fire testing of a loaded panel, mechanical tests on specimens from furnace fire tested panels and from elevated temperature tests on joint specimens. The temperature profiles observed in the joint region during the furnace fire tests are also compared to the corresponding theoretical prediction of the temperature profiles using the Newcastle 1-D fire model.
