Abstract

Background of Phenomenon Based Bioprocess Intensification based on the behaviour of microorganisms within confined micro-environment is given. This type of bioprocess intensification provides more than 30 fold enhancement of bio-conversions compared with the existing technology. The underlying phenomenon was first observed in in-vitro culture of animal cells (tissue engineering). The technique requires the manufacture of (nano-structured) micro-porous cell support systems with a well prescribed micro-architecture and chemical structure. It appears that the bioprocess intensification technique described here is a consequence of bacterial support architecture and the presence of flow through the monolithic micro-bioreactor which results in mono-layer bacterial proliferation, absence of extra-cellular matrix and biofilm formation. © BHR Group 2005 Process Intensification 6.
